A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
